Yearly Oratory Competion Has Kids Talking!

The theme for this year’s Oratory Competition will be: “A Tribute to Cultures Around the World.” We will be paying tribute to individuals of different cultures who have made an invaluable contribution to our world. Students in grades 4th through 8th are invited to participate. There will be three categories of competition:

1)  Speech Rendition: Individual participants will memorize and reenact a speech; this includes dramatic writings and letters, i.e. “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” by Dr. Martin Luther King. Also, Gandhi’s speech, “Eve of the Last Fast” and Cesar Chavez’s speech from November 9, 1984 to the United Farm Workers are examples of speeches that can be used in this category.

2) Poetry/Song Recital: Individual participants will memorize and recite a poem(s) or sing a song. Maya Angelou’s poem, “Still I Rise” and Sharon Olds’ “Japanese-American Farmhouse – California” are examples of poems that can be used in this category.

3) Original Speech: Individual participants will write, memorize and present a speech they wrote. The speech may be persuasive, informative or descriptive and must be commensurate with the theme, “A Tribute to Cultures Around the World.” An example would be a student presenting an informative speech about their own culture.

Presentations are limited to three (3) minutes or less. Each school may enter one representative per category. It is imperative that schools do not exceed their allotted entries.
