Regency Park Student Places Second in District Competition
5th Grade student Quentin Todd placed 2nd in the First Annual Geography Bowl in the Twin Rivers Unified District. In all, five students participated in the district-wide competition. Congratulations to all who participated.
Geography Bee
The District Level Bee will be conducted in two parts, written and oral. The written test will be used to determine who will advance to the oral event on March 28th. The written test will be administered on line. Schools will be able to access the test for two days, March 19th – 20th. The five individuals who were identified at each site will complete the on-line test on the aforementioned dates. A list of the students who qualify for the oral portion will be published Monday, March 23rd . A formal letter will be sent to each student and their families inviting them to the oral competition.
The Geography Bee will address the below listed categories; a sample question follows:
1. Cultural Geography: The Aztec Indians were indigenous to which country? Answer: Mexico
2. Across-the-Country: What is the capital of North Dakota? Answer: Bismarck
3. Around-the-World: What language is spoken by the most people in the world? Answer: Mandarin/Chinese
4. Plants and Animals: The lemur is indigenous to which country? Answer: Madagascar
5. Geographic Comparisons: What is the longest exposed mountain range in the world? Answer: Andes Mountain Range
To help prepare for the Geography Bee students should start with a study of the world map, globe and atlas. Students should become familiar with the continents, countries, states and provinces, islands, and major physical features of our planet. It is recommended for students to use “outline maps” of the world and continents to test themselves on the relative location of countries, islands, major water bodies, and major physical features. In addition, students should memorize the highest, lowest, and deepest points around the world, as well as, the capital cities of the fifty United States.
